Privacy Policy
Art Waco TX is a free, self-guided art trail site. This page explains, in plain language, what we collect when you use it and what we do with it.
The short version
We use ordinary website analytics to understand which trails and artworks people are interested in, and a counter that tells us how many people visit each stop on the trail. We use that to improve the trails and to show businesses who sponsor a stop that their sponsorship is reaching people. We do not sell your personal information.
Website analytics
We use Google Analytics to measure how the site is used. It collects information such as which pages you view, how long you stay, which site or search brought you here, your device and browser type, and an approximate location (typically your city) derived from your IP address. Google Analytics sets cookies on your device to do this.
This information is processed by Google. You can read how Google handles it at policies.google.com/privacy, and you can opt out of Google Analytics entirely using Google's browser opt-out add-on. Blocking cookies in your browser settings also prevents it.
The trail map and your location
The trail maps have a “Find me” button. If you never tap it, no location information is collected at all — you can read every page and walk every trail without it. If you do tap it, your browser asks your permission first, you are always in control of that, and you can withdraw it at any time in your browser settings.
When you use it, we record the route of that walk: the positions your phone reports while the trail page is open, which artworks you came close to, and how long you spent at each one. We use it to understand how people actually move through a trail — where they join it, what they stop for, and where they turn back — so we can improve the trails and show businesses who sponsor a stop that people are genuinely reaching it.
A recorded walk is not connected to your name, your account or any other walk. We do not ask who you are, and nothing in a walk record identifies you to us.
Recording stops when you close the page, when your phone goes to sleep, or when you tap the button again to switch it off.
How long we keep it
Individual walk routes are kept for 13 months and then deleted. The totals we calculate from them — how many people visited each artwork, and for how long — are kept indefinitely, because they carry nothing about any individual walk.
What we share
We share aggregate figures with trail sponsors and partners — for example, “this stop was visited 340 times in June,” “visitors typically spend two minutes here,” or “most walks start at the Suspension Bridge.” These are totals.
Sponsors are never shown an individual walk. They cannot see a route, and the reporting they receive is built so that it is not possible to pick one visitor out of it. Individual routes are visible only to Art Waco.
We do not sell personal information. We may share information with service providers who help us run the site (such as our web host and Google Analytics), and where the law requires it.
Children
The trails are made for families, and we welcome kids on them. The site is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
Saving a trail on your phone
If you tap “Save this trail for offline”, your browser stores that trail's stop pages and photos on your own device so the trail still works where the signal doesn't. That is a copy going to you — nothing about it is sent to us, and we cannot see what you saved or whether you saved anything at all. Adding the site to your home screen works the same way. You can remove it all at any time with the same button, or by clearing this site's data in your browser settings.
Your choices
You can decline or revoke location permission in your browser at any time, block or clear cookies, use the Google Analytics opt-out linked above, or clear anything you have saved for offline use. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights to request access to or deletion of personal information about you — contact us and we will honor them.
Changes
If we change how we handle information, we will update this page and the date at the top of it.
