28The Four Horsemen (of the Backyard)
Fence mural series, The Backyard Bar Stage & Grill, 511 S 8th StMURAL
An entire fence painted like a Texas yearbook — and the Four Horsemen are the guys who built the place.
The corrugated fence around The Backyard is a full Texas yearbook in airbrush: Willie with his braids, Selena mid-spin, George Strait under a good hat, Dimebag Darrell shredding through purple clouds, a King-of-the-Hill-style bar scene, and a spread of burgers and nachos under giant TEXAS letters. Then there's the panel labeled 4 HORSEMEN — four serious portraits staring down the lot like an album cover. Biblical? No sir. The venue's own about-page nicknames its four founders the Four Horsemen — the Texans who built this stage in 2015, one month before Magnolia opened two blocks away and all of Waco changed. Best available reading: they put themselves on their own fence.
Which is, frankly, the most Texas act of self-portraiture available. The venue's motto is “Nothing Fancy, But Something Special,” and the fence delivers both at once.
