88The Mural Being Born

Most murals arrive in your life finished, and keep the secret of how they got that way. This long wall on North MLK got caught in the act. On the right, a woman's face is complete — eyes closed, serene, hair streaming out in ribbons of teal and gold across the building. On the left, the same composition simply… stops being painted, and becomes the artist's line work: flowers, leaves and citrus wheels drawn in confident black outline on the bare wall, a coloring book at building scale, waiting for its color.

We photographed it this way on purpose, in August 2026, because this is the one stage of a mural's life nobody ever gets to see afterward. By the time you stand here it may be finished — probably is — and that's the assignment: go see what the lines became. Then come back to this photo and compare. You'll have seen a wall before and after it woke up.
