A sugar skull, a luchador, Spider-Man, and a row of panels painted by children. Nobody curated this and that is the point.
Across an open lot with picnic tables on it runs a wall that belongs to whoever turns up with paint. There is no plaque and no theme. There is a floral sugar skull at one end, grinning through marigolds. Next to it a lucha libre wrestler in a red and turquoise mask, signed CHUCHIN. Then Spider-Man, painted properly, by somebody who could really draw. Then a run of small panels in unmistakably child-sized brushstrokes — a sun, a smiling cloud, some very determined flowers. Then cherries. Then, at the far end, an enormous dragonfly.
It should not work. Every stop on this trail is somebody's commissioned, plaqued, funded, credited artwork, and this is a wall in a field. But stand at the picnic tables and look along it and you will notice the thing a curated wall cannot buy: every single panel was painted by somebody who wanted to be here. The child's sun is holding its own next to the professional's Spider-Man, and neither of them is apologising.
