Most businesses bolt a logo to the wall. This one painted a whole ocean behind it.

The side of the building on Kelly Drive is two flat bands of blue — pale sky above, deep teal below — meeting in a line that runs dead level across the entire wall. It reads instantly as water, and it puts you at the surface: standing in the parking lot, your eyes are exactly at the waterline. Then the logo lands right on that line and the whole thing turns lovely. SWIM sits above the surface. WACO sits below it. The cream-yellow sun behind the letters is cut precisely in half by the water, the way the sun looks when you come up for air with your eyes still part-under.

SINCE 2019 is painted in the arc beneath. For most of those years there was no wall to paint: founder Courtney Rogers taught Swim Waco's lessons out of rented and borrowed pools around town, packing up and starting over season after season. 216 Kelly Drive is the first building that was theirs, and this is what a swim school paints the month it finally has walls of its own. The lessons behind the logo are not decorative — drowning, Rogers told KWTX, is the second-leading cause of death for children ages one to five, and the whole point of the place is to make that number smaller.
