Somebody turned a map of the world into a coffee mug, and painted it on a wall.
Under a metal overhang at 15th and Colcord, a wall of white-painted panels carries one big brick-red coffee mug, and the mug is the planet. North America and Greenland spread across the top, South America drops down the left side, Europe sits just under the rim and Africa fills the middle. Beneath it, in tall condensed red capitals: WORLD CUP CAFE. The name is a pun, and the picture lands the joke before you finish reading it.
It is brushwork, not vinyl. The red goes streaky where the brush ran thin, the edges of the letters waver a little, and the panel seams, with their rows of screw heads, run straight down through the map. The white is scuffed and greyed in places. There is no signature anywhere on it: artist and year unknown — know who painted it? Tell us.
The corner came a long way to get a coffee shop. Mission Waco's own history remembers a grocery store, beauty salons and the Texas Theater here; Waco History remembers what came later, a shopping center it calls notoriously seedy, with four low-end bars and an adult theater called the Capri. In 1994 Mission Waco, founded three years earlier by Jimmy and Janet Dorrell, bought an old bar and took on the abandoned shopping center, and the center became home to the mission's main offices and to this cafe.
World Cup Cafe opened on January 9, 2006, a 42-seat corner restaurant with specialty coffees and pastries, and held its official grand opening on February 14. In January 2026, twenty years in, Mission Waco announced a Valentine's Day dinner and fundraiser to mark the milestone. The Fair Trade Market started in 2006 as part of the cafe and moved next door, to 1404 Colcord Ave, in 2013; its profits go back into Mission Waco. The cafe's listing sets out its purpose as community relationships, global concern, job training, and neighborhood economic development. That is a lot to ask of one coffee cup. This one has room.
