A full-wall copy of The Starry Night, painted in 2010, with the cypress running the whole height of the building.
Jenny Jameson painted this in 2010 on North 10th Street, and she did not adapt it, riff on it or Waco-ize it. It is The Starry Night: the swirling sky, the crescent moon in the upper right, the eleven stars, the sleeping village with its church spire, and the dark cypress rising up the left side of the composition and running the whole height of the wall.
Copying a famous painting onto a building is harder than inventing one. Everybody who walks past already knows what it is supposed to look like, so every wrong curve is a wrong curve in public. The swirls are the test, and they hold up — the sky keeps its rotation instead of flattening into wallpaper, which is where most reproductions of this painting fall apart.
It is worth noting for anyone keeping score: this is a different wall from the egg-beater mural over at Union Hall. Two blocks, two paintings, no relation.
