A sunrise painted around a corner, so you can turn into it.
This one is a 1950s travel poster that grew to the size of a building — navy and coral and mustard blocks, a fat orange wave rolling under the words HOME TOWN USA, and then a sun the size of a house coming up over WACO, TEXAS. Here's the part the artist got exactly right: the sunburst is parked on the building's corner, so the rays bend around the edge. You don't look at this sunrise. You walk through it.
The artists are Elizabeth Downey and Gabby Storey, who designed it so that Wacoans with years of painting experience — or none at all — could pick up a brush beside them. It was supported by an American Rescue Plan grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, awarded through Creative Waco.
