Three monarch butterflies the size of car doors on a beige wall at 1400 Elm, each one casting a painted shadow, and over the garage doors a message: You Are Loved.
The building at 1400 Elm Avenue is a low beige stucco box with two brown garage doors on the front, set between panels of wood shingle, and the address running down the corner in tall letters. Over the doors, in black script with a period at the end, it says You Are Loved. — a full sentence, painted like a signature.
Then turn the corner. Three monarch butterflies are flying up the side wall, and they are painted to fool you: the orange cells, the black veins, the white spots along the edge of the wings, the thin antennae, all of it photographically right, and under each one a soft grey shadow painted onto the stucco so the butterfly looks like it is hovering an inch off the wall in the evening sun. The biggest is at the left, near the address, wings spread wide. A second, a little smaller, flies lower and to the right. The third is small and far, up by the eave at the corner, as if it were already leaving.
The front sign wall, facing the street, is dark brown with a turquoise panel for Soulutions Chiropractic Therapies and a second turquoise panel carrying three white cut-out butterflies, so the theme was decided before the paint went on. We do not know who painted the monarchs or the lettering, or when. If you do, tell us.
