A coffee advertisement painted in the style of a hundred years ago, crisp enough that you can tell it isn’t.
The tall brick building next to the quilt wall carries two pieces of lettering, and both of them are playing with time. Along the roofline, in gold: ANTHEM · STORIES — Restoration. Celebration. Elevation. Below it, on the brick, an advertisement for coffee — 1869 Coffee, Local & Fresh, For Particular People — laid out exactly the way a wall ad would have been laid out when Waco actually painted its walls this way.
It isn’t old. Sign painter David Bond of Lucky B Design brought the coffee ad back in April 2020, period style, done well enough that most people walking past read it as a survivor. The giveaway is how clean it is. A hundred-year-old wall ad has been rained on for a hundred years; this one has crisp shoulders on every letter and a border that still closes all the way around.
The gold band above it is the open question. It is Bond’s kind of work and it went up in the same era, but nobody has confirmed for us who lettered it. If you know, tell us — we’ll put the name on this page.
