A building whose whole side reads like a quilt — with painted rooftop letters and a coffee ad in the old style.
The side of this Austin Avenue building looks, from across the parking lot, like somebody's grandmother made it: patches of rose, mint, cream and brick-red fitted together edge to edge, a quilt at architectural scale. Up close it keeps its secret. Is it one designed mural? Is it a century of paint jobs, sign layers and patch repairs that weathered into accidental harmony? We have stood in that parking lot longer than we'd like to admit, and we are honestly not sure — and we've decided that's the best thing about it.
What's not ambiguous is the lettering. Along the roofline: ANTHEM · STORIES — Restoration. Celebration. Elevation. And on the brick beside it, a coffee advertisement painted in the style of a hundred years ago — 1869 Coffee, Local & Fresh, For Particular People — crisp enough that you can tell it's new, and charming enough that you don't mind. Even the roll-up doors in the alley behind got a painting of their own. Somebody decided this whole building was a canvas, roofline to alley, and finished the job.
