A peach the size of a door, and a flight of front steps painted so every riser is a different color.
Ira Watkins painted this in 2019 for the Uptown Peach, a rental house on Washington Avenue, and the smart move was doing two things instead of one. On the wall there is a single enormous peach with Everything’s Peachy lettered beside it, which is the photograph everybody takes. But the steps up to the front door are the better piece: each riser is a different color, running warm to cool as you climb, so the stairs work like a paint chip card you can walk on.
The two halves talk to each other. The peach gives you the pun and the steps give you the reason to stay another minute. The house number, 2215, is painted in blue script right on the porch, which is the kind of detail an owner adds when they have decided the whole building is the artwork.
It is a private house. Photograph the outside, admire the stairs from the sidewalk, and let the tenants have their porch.
