A putt-putt bar on Mary Avenue with white waves swirling along its base and a flock of folded-paper cranes flying across a golden wall above the patio.
Putters is the mini-golf bar on Mary Avenue, and its outside is painted in two registers. Down low, along the patio wall and up the corner under the neon sign, the paint is deep navy-purple covered in white swirling wave lines, the kind you see in a Japanese woodblock print, curling over each other all the way down the block. Above the patio rail the wall turns gold, textured like crumpled paper, and across it fly the cranes: big geometric origami birds, one white, one red, one teal, one purple, each drawn as a set of hard-edged folds so you can almost see how the paper was creased. Sharp teal and navy shards fly with them, as if the sky had been folded too.
Keep walking to the far side of the building, past the tree, and the birds are gone. That wall is nothing but shards — teal, red, white, black and cream — the same folded language with the cranes taken out, so the abstraction is all that is left. Patio heaters, benches and a low yellow wall sit in front of the whole thing, which is a good place to look at it from.
