A black wall on Mary Avenue turned into a folk-art garden — a prickly pear outlined in yellow, blue stalks with pink bulbs, orange poppies — with WACO Y’ALL down the side.
A long black wall on Mary Avenue, and growing out of a yellow band along its base is a garden that looks like it was cut from colored paper. A green prickly pear with a thick yellow outline stands by the stairs at the left, next to a pink five-petaled flower. Then a tall blue stalk with an orange bud on top. Then a green cactus with orange flowers sprouting from a purple pot. Then the tallest plant of all, blue with jagged leaves and a pink bulb the size of a window. Pale mint starbursts float above them like dandelion clocks, an orange poppy opens near the corner, and a purple shell sits low in the bed. Every shape is flat and outlined, with no shading anywhere, which is what makes it feel like a picture book instead of a garden.
Down the left edge, in tall white serif capitals stacked vertically, it says WACO Y’ALL, with HOMETOWN USA underneath in smaller type. Gabby Storey painted it in 2022, and Creative Waco lists it as Waco Y’all at 115 Mary Avenue, across the street from the Cheers From Waco postcard. Storey also painted the two roll-up doors behind 820 Austin and, with Elizabeth Downey, the sunrise on the Downtown walk. Stand in the lot between them and you have two very different ways of loving the same town.
