23Geri
βGeriβ by Robbie Barber (b. 1964), 2019 Β· stainless steel pipe
Eighteen feet of giraffe drawn in steel pipe, reaching for the leaves.
Longfellow bends down. Geri does the exact opposite β she goes straight up, eighteen feet of her, neck stretched and tongue out for the live oak leaves just above her head. She has been almost reaching them for years. What makes her wonderful is that she isn't solid: she's drawn rather than carved, bent out of stainless steel pipe, so the whole park shows through her. Walk a slow circle and she assembles and comes apart again β a giraffe from here, a tangle of silver lines three steps to the left, a giraffe once more. She is the only animal on this trail you can see the sky through.
