Mama Sunday & the Cub Pile — Lioness with Cubs, Waco, Texas
A stop on the Waco Sculpture Zoo trail

18Mama Sunday & the Cub Pile

“Lioness with Cubs” by Tom Tischler (b. 1947), 2004 · bronze

The most patient mother in Waco, being climbed on by her entire family at once.

Mama Sunday is being climbed on by her whole cub pile at the same time: one chewing her cheek, one wrestling her tail, one flopped over on its back showing everybody its belly. Her eyes are closed. Mothers everywhere understand. She is also the oldest traveler on this walk by a wide margin — cast in bronze in 2004, more than a decade before the parade grew up around her. Every other animal here is still telling the story of how it got to Waco. Mama Sunday has simply been lying in this spot the whole time, waiting for the rest of them to arrive, and letting the cubs win.
