Longfellow is nine feet of neck and all of it kindness. He learned long ago that the best things on the trail — dandelions, ladybugs, kids in strollers — happen close to the ground, so that's where he keeps his heart. There is another giraffe waiting near the gates, and she does the opposite: she goes straight up, reaching for the treetops. Longfellow chose to bend. Stand still in front of him for a moment and he'll appear to be listening to you, which, after all these years of practice, he very nearly is. Nothing on this trail is in less of a hurry.
