15The Riddle Cat
“Sumatran Tiger” by Tom Tischler, 2002 · bronze
She rests like a sphinx and asks every traveler one riddle.
The Riddle Cat came from the far side of the world and decided that anyone walking to the zoo should earn it. So she lies exactly like a sphinx — paws forward, head high, patient as stone — and asks every traveler one riddle: 'I run all day beside you and never take a step. What am I?' Answer right and you may pass with her blessing. Answer wrong and… you may also pass. She's a riddle cat, not a rule cat. (Psst — look to your left. The answer is the river.)
