16Midnight
“Night Cat” by Douwe Blumberg, 2018 · silicon bronze, ferric-nitrate patina
She drinks the moon from the river every night. That's her story, anyway.
Midnight travels only after dark, which is why you've caught her mid-sip — head low over the water, quiet as a held breath. The other animals say that every night she drinks the moon's reflection right out of the Brazos, and that's why the moon comes back a little thinner some weeks. It always grows back. She always comes back for more. The moon, for the record, has never once complained. (Her patina is so dark that visitors whisper 'panther' — but look at her plaque: she's a mountain lion, Texas's own great cat, dressed for the night shift.)
