Two roll-up doors in a service alley, painted like somebody flung a good day at them.
Most alleys get whatever paint is left over. This one got Gabby Storey. Two roll-up doors behind 820 Austin Avenue carry splotches of color like loaded brush strokes, wavy lines, circles and clumps of shape that never resolve into anything and don’t need to. The looseness is deliberate, and the color choices underneath it are far more careful than the looseness lets on.
Storey painted the pair in 2022. Creative Waco lists them as Abstract Brush & Line Mural, which is an accurate and completely unromantic name for two doors having more fun than the buildings around them.
It is worth the few steps off Austin Avenue for one reason: almost nobody looks. A service alley is where a city stops performing — the part of the block that exists for dumpsters and deliveries and nobody’s photograph. Somebody painted this one anyway.
