A rose-pink typewriter on a white garage door, halfway through typing the city a love letter.
A white corrugated roll-up door on La Salle Avenue, and painted on it a rose-pink manual typewriter with round white keys, a black platen and a sheet of paper rolled up out of the top. The paper reads Dear Waco, WE LOVE YOU! — “Dear Waco” in a swinging script, the rest in tall block capitals. Sprigs of black and dusty-red leaves and seed heads fan up on either side of the page, like the letter is being written in a garden.
Kalyn Dunks painted it for Shades of Shabby, the vintage shop that used the building, and told the Wacoan the owners wanted a mural about the love people have for Waco. The typewriter was her idea, and the sheet of paper was meant to be repainted now and then so the letter could change. This is the message it has carried longest.
Dunks is on this trail already — her Visiting Angels wings are on Austin Avenue — and this is the earlier, quieter work: one object, two lines of type, a door that most days is just a door.
