Behind the smoke shop block sits an 800-square-foot building from 1955, painted bright red and covered — completely, deliriously — in giant painted matchsticks, scattered like somebody dropped the box. The shop is called The Fire Place. State records show this little building has already lived at least three business lives since 2021, closing and relighting under new owners like, well, like a match. A building that keeps flaming out and restarting, dressed as a box of matches, named The Fire Place, parked behind a smoke shop: at some point the universe stops being subtle.

And the kicker, visible in one glance from the curb: a real fire hydrant stands directly in front of it. On duty. Unamused. The single greatest piece of accidental site-specific art in Waco.
